Temu works on discovery, not search. This changes what you list, how you price, and what sells
September 29, 2026
On most marketplaces, the buyer knows what they want. They search for headphones, buy them and leave. Temu works differently, and this difference shapes how you list, how you price, and which of your products sell.
In our July virtual session, Alan Small, a category lead at Temu covering pets, appliances, media and toys, went through what makes the marketplace different and what separates sellers who grow there from those who stall. George Amos of Aquacadabra, one of the UK's largest aquatics retailers, talked about joining at the start of the year. Jack Liptrott then showed how the integration works inside StoreFeeder.
A feed that reacts, rather than a search bar
Open the Temu app, and the feed responds to what you do in it. When you click a pair of headphones, the feed registers that choice; if you then click on wireless headphones, it narrows further. No two buyers see the same feed, as Temu funds the coupons it offers based on each buyer's behaviour.
The engagement figures prove that this approach is working well. Temu sees the average UK customer spending 18 minutes a day in the app, against roughly 10 or 11 minutes on a traditional marketplace. Seven in ten shoppers are repeat buyers, while 80% of UK traffic arrives organic or direct, so you’re not bidding against Temu on Google Shopping to reach the same person twice.
For a seller, discovery does the job that paid advertising does elsewhere. Alan's point was that most of the sellers he manages run no ads at all.
Two misconceptions to address
The first misconception is that Temu only moves cheap, unbranded goods. Alan described the customer as value-conscious rather than budget-conscious: the shopper who objects to paying a monthly subscription for the privilege of buying anything. The Temu catalogue runs from iPhones and laptops through to £2,000 furniture sets. Temu's own research cites 74% of UK users as extremely likely to recommend the app.
The second is that a new channel eats the ones you already have. One of Temu's largest tech sellers, also one of the largest on Amazon, ran the analysis: between 90% and 95% of their Temu orders went to customers they’d never delivered to before, and their existing channels were unaffected.
George reached the same conclusion from a different direction. Aquacadabra had already sold across seven marketplaces, and he was reluctant about adding Temu as the eighth. They went live at the start of the year anyway, and revenue on the channel has grown by 30% to 40% month on month since, covering roughly half of their catalogue. Products he had listed on Amazon for five years without a single sale started moving on Temu at the same price, with nothing pushing them.
What it costs to be there
The commission is between 7% and 11%, depending on the category. There are no joining fees, no listing fees, and no seller fees, and there is no ‘Buy Box’ to win, which makes the model more like eBay than Amazon.
To sell as a UK seller, you need to be UK registered, hold your stock in the UK, and hold the rights to anything trademarked that you list.
What actually grows a Temu account?
- Load the full catalogue. The algorithm places your products better the more of them it has to work with. Aquacadabra has 3,000 to 4,000 lines live against 7,000 to 8,000 held and is still adding.
- Put the work into titles and images. These are the most important for search. You get 500 characters in a title, and Alan's advice is to use all of them. The description matters for conversion once a buyer is on the page, not for discovery. Video helps too, since Temu sometimes surfaces it ahead of your static images in the feed.
- Price competitively or lose traffic. Pricing above the comparable product suppresses your visibility. With no ad costs to recover, there’s more room to do this than on other channels.
- Register your brand. Registered brands get stronger protection and more traffic behind them.
- Set a realistic shipping template. You have two business days to despatch, then you choose a one-to-two, one-to-three, or three-to-five-day template. A faster one stands out against overseas sellers.
- Use the deals. Flash, clearance, and mega deals are self-funded promotions you opt into, and they reach buyers that an account manager can’t get you.
A practical note from the Q&A: if a product sits on low traffic because Temu's catalogue price comparison has it beaten, you can appeal the comparison or list the item as a bundle. A drill sold with a set of bits is a unique product, so it is not priced against the drill on its own.
The account manager is the part sellers underrate
Every seller who joins through StoreFeeder gets a dedicated UK account manager. That covers onboarding and KYC, brand registration, bulk product uploads, listing optimisation, weekly marketing submissions, and after-sales support when an order is disputed.
George's example was a gravel line that dropped into a low-traffic hold on price. He rang Alan, and it was back to normal within 24 hours. On other marketplaces, he said, that phone call doesn’t exist.
Connecting Temu to StoreFeeder
Sellers put 31,000 Temu orders through StoreFeeder in a single week this summer. It’s one of the newest channels we integrate with and one of the fastest-growing.
Connecting it takes a few minutes. In Temu Seller Central, open ‘Apps and Services’, find StoreFeeder in the App Store, and authorise it. Copy the access token, paste it into a new integration in StoreFeeder, test the connection, and you’re live.
After that, it behaves like every other channel: listings import on their own, and stock syncs across everywhere you sell with StoreFeeder as the master, with out-of-stock thresholds and oversell buffers behind it. Orders arrive allocated and ready to pick, and tracking goes back to Temu on despatch.
Two things matter more on Temu than elsewhere. Buyers often place several separate orders at once, so StoreFeeder merges them into one pick, one label, and one shipping charge. And if a buyer cancels, the cancellation syncs back without anyone touching it.
The integration isn’t an add-on, so it’s included for every StoreFeeder customer.
A discovery feed rewards the seller who puts the whole catalogue in front of it and keeps stock accurate while volume climbs. Both of these are operational challenges first, before they become commercial ones.
