What is a bin location?

October 30, 2026

A bin location is a specific, labelled place in a warehouse where stock is kept, such as an aisle, shelf and position (for example A-03-2). Recording each product's bin location tells pickers exactly where to go.

Why it matters for online retailers

Without bin locations, picking depends on memory. With them, new staff can pick accurately on day one, pick routes get shorter and stock is easier to count.

How to set up bin locations

  • Use a simple code such as aisle, bay, shelf and position.
  • Label every location with a barcode.
  • Put fast-selling products nearest the packing area.
  • Keep separate locations for bulk stock, pick faces, returns and quarantine.

Fixed vs dynamic locations

  • Fixed: each product always lives in the same bin.
  • Dynamic: stock goes wherever there is space, and the system records where.

How StoreFeeder handles it

In StoreFeeder, every unit is tracked to a location, such as a pick bin, bulk, quarantine, zone or a second warehouse. Pickers are sent to the right bin, put-away is directed, and transfers between locations or sites are done from the handheld.
